A private prison company executive nominated to become a federal judge in Nashville has run into a determined opponent: a former inmate. Convinced that Gustavus Puryear IV, chief lawyer with Corrections Corporation of America, was unqualified and might face a conflict overseeing litigation involving CCA, Alex Friedmann began a PR campaign that has led all the way to the Senate. At a Judiciary Committee hearing, Puryear was questioned about issues originally raised by Friedmann and a nonprofit he helps run.
