AP - The daughter of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was sentenced to 18 months of court supervision after pleading guilty to drunken driving.

Court Lets Overstock.com Pursue Libel Suit Over Financial Analysis Company’s Report

A California appellate court brushed aside claims Wednesday that Overstock.com tried to gag a financial analysis company when it sued for libel two years ago. In doing so, the court allowed the online retailer to continue its case against Gradient Analytics, a company that publishes reports on public companies for institutional investors, and one of its clients. The unanimous decision rejected Gradient’s attempt to get the complaint thrown out as a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation.

A grim Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye said Tuesday that a finding in a study she initiated — that state court judges’ pay is 48th lowest in the country when adjusted for New York’s high cost of living — is further confirmation of the “miserable situation” the judiciary finds itself in after more than eight years without a salary increase. “What a pity, what a shame, what an embarrassment it is … that our judges face a ninth year of absolutely frozen compensation,” Kaye said.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday made it significantly easier for employers to defend against Title VII workplace discrimination claims that are based on long-ago decisions about salary and raises. By a 5-4 vote, the Court said that employees claiming they received disparate treatment based on gender or race must do so within 180 days of the original discriminatory action — not within 180 days of their last paycheck.
